Sobbing - all weekend long and all day today

I was born in a commune out ot the “Jesus Movement” in D.C.. From there I moved from houses, to apartments, to “brothers’ houses”, to cars, to campgrounds, etc.. I made my last city move after flunking out of my freshman year at the University of Colorado. It was the summer of ‘92. I hung out with my best friends - Niki, Tammy and Margo - and met the love of my life, Heath.

I remember the first time I went over to Heath’s house. I was astounded to say the least! I grew up poor and homes like his were just houses I saw from the inside of a car or a Sunset Magezine. I met his wonderful mother that day and from that first meeting we forged a mother-daughter relationship like no other. His father is and always has been the voice of reason and practical love which was manifested through his beautiful rhododendrons and azaleas.

Their house, 1915 Bidwell Way, was a beacon in my life. When my daughter was born she spent her days there as I finished school. Her first steps were taken there. When my son was a baby he tipped over in the blue infant boat in the pool, and mom jumped in her clothes to fetch him.

At my saddest and at my happiest, I always found refuge there, and I will miss her so much. She was more than house to me.

I love you house, and I will always miss you.

…ball the memories up and sprinkle them with kisses, stuff them deep in your pocket and nibble on them from time to time, magically you’ll be there, barefoot and smiling, catching blue boats in mid air, while pink flowers makes circles around your toes…

I’ll miss her too. Bye to the yellow tile worn by primping at the sink in the upstairs bath and the tub with the water marks under the fauset. Bye to the blue and white wall paper and the paint spatters on the floor that came after the fire with unopened flu. Bye to the sticky front door lock and the closet that hid the vacuum. Bye to the stove that ticked when you got too generous with the lysol and the tv room with marker stains made by Summer and Graeme. Bye house.

…Bye to the family room closet crammed full of mom’s clothes. Bye to the moth ball smell you inhale when walking through the front door. Bye to the pink carpeted stairs. Bye to Heath’s old room with the unusable, skinny closets. Bye to the slippery, steep back steps. Bye to the nick nack cove hidden in the breakfast nook. Bye to the all the ugly, gothic light fixtures. Bye to the toilet that you had to flush twice. Bye to the summer’s filled with Marco Polo. Goodbye beautiful old, sturdy, love-filled house. Goodbye my love.
