Half Mexican

I am half Mexican. My mother was raised, however, to NEVER embrace her heritage. Her mother and father did not speak Spanish at home, nor did they teach it to my mother. They changed their last name from Fierro to Starr in the 1940’s right before my grandfather was deployed to France.

Lately, I have been watching Spanish TV stations in amazement. The soaps are so intriguing! AND the game shows - HELLO! I am dying to know what they are screaming and laughing about! So…I’ve decided to learn Spanish. I downloaded some tutorials and I enrolled in a conversational Spanish class at the Learning Exchange. I don’t expect to learn it perfectly - just enough to know when to laugh and cry when I watch TV!

How awesome to learn that…so that makes your kids a 1/4 Mexican right? Maybe it will come naturally to you!

I applaude your desire to get back to some of your “roots”…there are free podcasts too you can subscribe to for Spanish…FYI…let me know what they ARE saying on some of those game shows…although I’m a little fearful of finding out!!

p.s. I never knew you were half Mexican. I always wondered why you were so cool…couldn’t put my finger on it though.

Call me up if you ever want to practice tu espanol. When I lived in Mexico, I used to watch the telenovelas religiously. I loved them! Unlike the soaps here, they actually have a beginning and an end. I’m sad to say that I don’t watch them anymore. I guess there is only so much to watch in a day, and Survivor and The Amazing Race have taken precedence.
    Adios Senorita!
